ADVICE FOR THOSE PATIENTS SEEKING IMPLANT RETAINED CROWN AND BRIDGEWORK 01/30/2012

_ Patients often look for less expensive ways of receiving implant retained restorations because they are certainly expensive  and determining the best
place to get this treatment is certainly advisable.

First and foremost one must completely trust the dentist who is placing the implants and restoring the implants.  However a patient must understand what they are getting.

The decision about what sort of prosthesis should be made requires quite some planning by the dentist. Certainly a single back tooth is fairly simple compared to a full set of teeth and there are several ways to do these treatments and plenty of complications.  The patient should understand these issues before going forward.

What is the brand of the implant, where is it made.  Does it come with a warranty.  Has research been done for this specific brand?  What is the best length of time for the implant to be in place before any artificial teeth are attached...what are the risks if teeth are attached the same day as the implants are placed?

How are the artificial teeth going to be attached to the implant(s).  How many implants are needed to support the bridges or crowns.  What is the best material for the crowns and bridges to be made from.  Will there be a try in to see if the treatment is pleasing?

Some crowns and bridges are cemented to secondary structures called abutments and some are fastened directly to implants with screws.  There are many advantages to directly screwing the bridges and  crowns to the implants but not all cases can be done this way.

When all the issues I have mentioned are sorted out, only then will the patient be ready to determine if the cost is appropriate for the treatment.
